Musings on dogs and alcohol

Alcohol, as we all know, is not particularly good for your health. To be perfectly blunt, it is a sort of poison for the body. If drunk in moderation, however, the body can process it, much to humans’ enjoyment. Coffee, is another drink which does the body no good if too much of it is consumed. Like alcohol, it is not a necessary beverage for survival. Yet, humans enjoy both alcohol and coffee.

Can dogs tell what is good for them or not? Alcohol, coffee and chocolate are known to be bad for dogs. My border terrier used to bark frenetically at a glass of beer. My lagotto sniffs at a glass of wine and turns his head away. However, if I leave a cup of coffee anywhere he can get to, he will lap it all up. The same with chocolate. He seems to be obsessed with it. He has perfected the art of detecting and getting hold of it. His recent achievement was to unzip a bag, remove and eat a snickers bar, with the wrapper on. He seems to stomach it well and is in good health…

The moral of the story: humans are no better than dogs or is it the other way around?
